Insurance Fraud and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU)

Insurance adjusters often refer claims to the SIU unit to review “suspicious claims”. The suspicion can really just about anything. If the stories about the claim do not match up then this adjuster will take other statements and probably meet face to face to ask more detailed questions.

Having a claim referred to SIU is not a big deal. It is like having your claim being handled by a PIP adjuster. The SIU investigator will dig further than a normal adjuster would. They will try to clear the confusion.

If there is indication of fraud, or that the claim is being inflated the SIU could do several things to damage your record. They will probably not renew the policy. That in its self could be difficult to explain to other insurance companies. Depending in what kind of fraud we are talking about, the SIU investigator can refer your case to a central data base where all insurance companies report fraudulent insureds. If you are referred to one of this data bases, your name will be in the black list for all the major insurance companies. Getting a new policy will be a nightmare. If you get it, prepare to pay!

If the case is extreme, then the police will be involved. Insurance companies involved the police when they have very solid evidence and they know there is nothing that come back and bite them. They are very afraid of liability (getting suit later on).

The will cancel the policy for sure. Read more about cancellation of coverage clauses.
